The emerald cut is clean and symmetrical with a bright open table and sharp step facets that give orderly flashes along the length of the stone. Transparency is high and the body reads bright rather than dark. Pleochroism is evident as the color shifts slightly between richer green down the length and a lighter tone across the width. The luster is crisp and vitreous with only minute internal features visible under magnification.
The gem is elbaite from Mozambique’s Alto Ligonha pegmatite field, a region that has produced prized greens for decades. In this material chromium and vanadium are the main chromophores with a supporting role from iron, a mix that creates saturated greens with good daylight stability. Mining is artisanal and pocket based which means output is uneven and clean crystals capable of cutting above two carats are limited. Well made emerald cuts in this size with strong transparent color are therefore uncommon and are favored examples of Mozambican green tourmaline.
