Translucent Blue Sapphire 0.95 CT | Queensland, Australia
A cool blue saturates this 0.95 carat sapphire, cut in a balanced oval that shows bright reflections across the crown. The body is translucent with fine silk and gentle growth bands that give a soft internal glow without muting the color. Facet junctions are clean and the table is open, so the tone reads even in daylight and indoor light with a pleasing royal to medium blue range. Luster is vitreous and the stone presents with stable color and calm brightness.
This sapphire comes from the Central Queensland gemfields of Australia, a historic district that includes Rubyvale, Sapphire and Anakie. The region’s basalts are rich in iron and titanium, a chemistry that yields deep blue and minimal red fluorescence which creates a cool hue prized by many collectors. Mining began in the late nineteenth century and expanded through the twentieth century, with much of the output supplying cutting centers in Thailand. Present day production is modest and often small scale. Material suitable for fine faceting is less common because much rough is either very dark or better suited to stars. A near one carat stone with even color and a lively face is a desirable example of Queensland sapphire.
